Surviving Finals Week

By Jordyn Austin on December 1, 2016

With “Finals Week” approaching for many colleges and universities, everyone could use a little encouragement. Here are some helpful tips to prepare you for your survival of finals week.

Don’t procrastinate studying.

We as college students oftentimes become very overwhelmed, and we tend to put our assignments aside with the excuse of “we’ll do it later.” Finals are definitely not the time to do that. If you wait until the last minute you’ll find yourself even more overwhelmed.

Instead, make time and space in your planner to study. If you know you need three days to study for an exam, then write in your planner three days ahead and remind yourself to study. This will help you tremendously. If you actually write it down and plan when to study, you have a better chance of actually sticking to it.

(Although Netflix sounds way more appealing than studying, please choose studying.)

Talk to your classmates about having study sessions.

Remember that you are not alone during finals. Your classmates are in the exact same boat as you. You guys can accomplish a lot in numbers. Your classmates may have study techniques and different ways of memorizing materials than you. Do not be afraid to ask if they have a good gasp on something and have them explain it to you. It can be very helpful to get help and share materials with your peers.

Get help when needed.

Don’t be afraid to go to your professor’s office hours or tutoring hours if you need help. Many professors are concerned about your success too, and I am sure many of them will make some time for you and set up a meeting with you to discuss and get an understanding on something you’re having trouble with. Send emails, text friends and get the help you need. Go with a group if you feel nervous. People will be glad to help you or at least point you to resources that will help you.

Organize your materials.

Try to organize all your notes and study materials from start to finish. Go over everything, but take notes of the areas you are still having trouble understanding and pay more attention to those. Being organized can cut down a lot of stress and ensure you know exactly what you know well and what you still need to work on.

And finally … RELAX.

Stress ALWAYS does more harm than good. Stress can affect your mental and physical health and that is never good. If you are getting to the point to where you are so overwhelmed and stressed out that you feel sick, go ahead and stop what you’re doing and come back to it later. Your health will always be more important than school work.  Never underestimate anxiety and being overwhelmed. These take a huge toll on our bodies and we should listen to our body when something does not feel right.
